Greetings and appreciation from new president, Masaki Furuya

I have to inform you that my father, Masashi Furuya, passed away on 23rd October because of sudden stroke of cerebral hemorrhage. He had spoken so often and so warmly of you as a teacher and friend. We know you join us in our sorrow.

In 1972, when traveling abroad was still difficult, Masashi Furuya voyaged to Germany by himself in order to study gemmology at D.Gem.G. It was the beginning of his journey for the gemstones to all over the world.

In Idar-Oberstein of Germany, where he moved to with his family in 1977, he found agate cameo of European traditional beauty. He introduced cameo to Japan, and it was loved by many Japanese customers. Gemstones which he found in Idar-Oberstein, a Mecca of gemstone cutting, fascinated and encouraged him to fly to many gemstone origins. Every time he found new gemstones, he was delighted to introduce them to Japanese market. In 1998 when the new sapphire mine was discovered in Madagascar, he tried mining of his heart’s desire. With exploring, he celebrated the moment when the discovered gemstone is first touched by human.

While the production of beautiful natural gemstones has been decreasing and that of synthetic and treated stones increasing, Masashi Furuya felt it necessary to establish a gemmological laboratory in Japan to disclose the information of gemstones properly and to introduce the attractiveness of gemstones to the market with their romance. With many supports of his friends of all over the world, he established Japan Germany Gemmological Laboratory. It was a great encouragement that Professor Eduard J. Gübelin kindly gave a lecture at the opening ceremony of the laboratory. These five years, with his long and deep experience in the gemstone industry, he had often appeared on TV shopping program, QVC Japan Ltd. to give presentation of unique gemstones. He really enjoyed these opportunities to show the forgotten attractiveness of gemstones directly to the customers.

At home, he encountered Kimiko of lifetime partner who admired his true love for gemstones. They had a son, Masaki and a daughter, Rena. After he started a laboratory, my mother worked together with him. He appreciated her help very much, and working together has made their time even more precious.

About education of children, he never forced us into certain ways but he gave us any opportunities to learn what we wanted. He let me learn gemmology in Japan, U.S. and Germany and MBA at the graduate school. When I look back now, he prepared the chances for me to meet his friends of all over the world.

In this May, my baby girl, Mana was born. My father congratulated himself on holding his first grand daughter in his arms. Maybe it was an only filial piety that I could do for him. From now, I will succeed his last wishes to pursue the beauty and attractiveness of gemstones to show my gratitude to him.

My father’s life of 59 years was quite short but full. Now, we just thank him for keeping on loving gemstones and family for whole his life. Also we appreciate your friendship-like working relationship and warm support for my father during his life from the bottom of our heart. Thank you very much.

Sincerely Yours,

November 2007
